Sr. Agnes Fitzgerald
Manager: Cuan Mhuire Addition Centre

Sr. Agnes Fitzgerald has been running the Cuan Mhuire Addition Centre in Bruree for the last 43 years. A native of Brosna, Co. Kerry she joined the Sisters of Mercy Nuns in 1952 and taught in Ardee, Co. Louth until 1982.

There are now five Cuan Mhuire Centres throughout Ireland with approximately 600 people sleeping in a Cuan Mhuire facility of one sort or another every night. Every year 2500 people are admitted to one of the Centres and since its opening has treated over 100,000 people throughout Ireland.

The residence in Bruree was purchased in 1980 having previously been a stud farm. In support of her sister, Sr. Agnes came to develop and run the Centre in 1982 and since then has dedicated her life to supporting those with varying addictions. Today the Centre has 130 beds, including 30 detox beds.

In Cuan Mhuire the hope is that when people go through a programme they begin to see their own goodness and their own self-worth and that they begin to become the people they were created to be. Programmes are based on the philosophy of total abstinence and strive to restore the confidence, self-respect and sense of responsibility of all participants.
The whole goal of Cuan Mhuire is to get people to be the people they were created to be.
