It is with deep regret that I have to confirm Professor Roger Downer’s passing on Saturday last, the 19th of November.

Roger made a great contribution to the All Ireland Scholarships (AIS) where he has served as a Trustee for the past fifteen years. He devoted his life to the third level education sector, he served the majority of his career in senior positions at the University of Waterloo, Canada and had sabbatical leaves at Hokkaido University in Japan and Oxford University. The pinnacle of his career was as President of the University of Limerick where he led the University for eight years through an extraordinary period of growth when it developed the North Campus in Co. Clare and established UL’s Postgraduate School of Medicine.

Roger had great empathy and a thorough understanding of third level education students, and in addition to his support as a Trustee he was the ideal person to successfully lead the establishment and development of the All Ireland Scholarships Alumni Association.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.
